Mangalore, Oct 22: The Bejai Market Horata Samithi staged a protest in front of the church against delay in construction of a hi-tech market, here, on Saturday October 20.
The protest was led by KPCC secretary Ivan D’Souza.
Addressing the gathering, he said that the municipality started the construction work in the year 2004. Even after eight years the work is still pending, due to which the trading activities are being carried out next to the church premises, he alleged.
He blamed the negligence of state government and municipality in the delay of work.
“Eight years back, the estimated cost of the hi-tech market was Rs 6 cr. Due to the delay in work, the price has now increased to Rs 20 cr. This is clear indication that the government is wasting people’s money”, he said.
Ivan said that the MCC has failed in appointing a contractor for the market construction. Even after calling tenders for the fourth time, there were no contractors willing to take up the work.
He said that the samithi will continue to protest until the construction work is resumed.
