Mangalore, Oct 21: In order to pay homage to the brave Central Reserve Police Jawans who laid down their life while fighting Chinese insurgency in Ladakh, Commemoration Day or Martyrs’ Day was observed by Dakshina Kannada district police here at CRP ground on Sunday October 21.
The names of police officers and men, who made the supreme sacrifice while on duty were read out at the Commemoration Parade by Manish Karbikar and Abhishek Goel.
On the occasion, Pratap Reddy, IGP of Western Ghats, Manish Karbekar, police commissioner, SP Abhishek Goel paid homage tribute to the policemen who laid down their lives in the service of the nation.
Speaking on the occasion, Manish remembered the sacrifice of DySP Karan Singh of CRP who was attacked by Chinese troops in 1959. During those days policemen were armed with only rifles, but their dedication and patriotism towards the nation is commendable, he added.
While combating with Chinese troops, as many as ten policemen lost their lives and around nine were held by Chinese troops. Since then the day is observed as Police Commemoration Day across the country, he said.
Manish also lauded the sacrifice of the martyrs, who lost their lives while protecting the security and the integrity of the country.
He remembered the services rendered by policemen who do their duty day and night for the sake of country’s protection.
In his address, Ashok Nijalingannavar, district session judge said that the police play an important role in the society. The contribution of the policemen is praiseworthy because of whom the people live without fear, he added.
As a mark of tribute to the departed policemen, the police flag was lowered for two minutes.

Udupi, Oct 21: The problems which people faced before Independence do not exists now, said G S Revankar, judge of fast-track court (FTC)-II.
He addressed the gathering during Police Commemoration Day observed by Udupi District police at Central Reserve Police Force center on Sunday October 21.
Revankar said that just as so many leaders fought for India's independence, police also play an important role in safeguarding the country, he added.
After independence, around 68 policemen sacrificed their lives for country in 1960-62 and later the toll kept on rising, he added.
People's co-operation is very important to police in getting rid of terrorist and naxal activities, he said. He also lauded some of the policemen who were successful in arresting terrorists in other parts of the country.
On the occasion, the names of 574 policemen who lost their lives while fighting for the country were read and tribute was paid by Mithra Heraje, assistant police commissioner of Chikmagalur district.
Retired soldiers like R L Dias and Joseph Anchan were present.
Dr Prabhudev Mane, Udupi DYSP welcomed the gathering, Manmohan Rao compered and V Jayanath Shetty, Karkala DYSP delivered the vote of thanks.
