Mangalore, Oct 14: A 24-year-old differently-abled girl allegedly set herself on fire at her house at Pakaladka, Bajal here on Sunday October 14.
The deceased has been identified as Vidya Gatty, daughter of Sanjiv and Saraswati Gatty, residents of Bajal.
Intial reports stated that the kerosene stove burst when Vidya was boiling water for bath. However, it is now said to be a case of suicide, as Vidya reportedly admitted on the way to the hospital that she had attempted to end her life.
Though Vidya Gatty was differently-abled, she was capable of doing the house chores on her own. Her mother was out at the time of the incident, and except for her aged father no one was around.
Vidya was in the habit of taking bath in the evenings, but on Sunday she went into the bathroom to light up the fire for bath in the morning. When she began screaming for help, the neighbours broke open the door. Though critically injured, she reportedly refused to be taken to hospital.
It was initially suspected that the kerosene stove might have burst, but later Vidya herself admitted that she attempted to commit suicide. She breathed her last in the hospital.
Meanwhile, our photojournalist called up the ambulance and also the police. To save time, she was rushed to the hospital in a car.
Kankanady police have registered a case.
