Mangalore, Oct 13: Health Global Enterprises Ltd, specialists in cancer care organized a press meet on the advancements in the treatment of prostate cancer on October 12.
On this occasion, Dr Kumar Swamy, senior consultant, radiation oncologist of HCG said currently the total number of prostate cancer patients has doubled in comparison to years of 2002, 2006; this may be due to problem of ageing and lifestyle changes.
He stated that the treatment for prostate cancer has advanced over years. Earlier, for a patient diagnosed with prostate cancer the particular organ of the body had to be removed, but now with the development of medicine and advanced technology better effective treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation are made available.
Robotic Radio surgery is an now an option where the duration of the treatment lasts for about 2 weeks, instead of eight weeks in normal radiation therapy. It can combined with initial radio therapy periodically and with cyberknife boost of three sittings for better cure. The side effects have drastically reduced with the present day radiation therapy and radio surgery approaches, he said.
Briefing the press Dr Radheshyam, consultant, medical oncologist of HCG said that by “modifying the life style and diet one can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer. The initial stages of prostate cancer is asymptomatic and in most cases the patients present symptoms that are benign, this is potentially curable if detected early".
Prostate cancer can be prevented with regular exercise, consuming more vegetables and fruits,and living a healthier lifestyle, the doctor advised.
