Union Coal Minister says Wives Lose Charm over Time, Apologizes

Kanpur/New Delhi, Oct 3 (PTI): Union Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal found himself at the centre of a controversy on Tuesday over his sexist remark that wives lose charm over time, sparking an outrage among women's groups which dubbed the comment as "disgusting and derogatory".

Facing flak for his remarks at a Kavi sammelan in Kanpur on Sunday night, Jaiswal offered an apology, saying he had no intention to hurt the sentiments of women.

Jaiswal also came under attack from opposition BJP which raised questions on his continuance in the Union Cabinet.

Protestors including women burnt effigies of Jaiswal and blackened posters with his face on it in his home town in Kanpur.

Jaiswal, who was addressing the sammelan when news of India's victory over Pakistan in a ICC World Twenty20 match in Sri Lanka came in, said that like an old victory wives lose charm as time goes by.

Observing that people became excited after India's victory, Jaiswal said, "new new victory and new wedding, both of them have their own importance.

As time will pass, the victory will become old. As time passes wife also becomes old that charm does not sustain."

Jaiswal claimed today his comments were misconstrued and taken out of context and that he apologised for the same if they have hurt the sentiments of women.

"When I was inaugurating a Kavi sammelan news came that India beat Pakistan and people started bursting crackers. I stopped the sammelan and said that you celebrate the victory first since the charm of celebration is for new victory only.

If it will get old the charm will get lost like the way a wife gets old then celebration of marriage does not remain that enjoyable. Similarly, if the victory will become old you will not enjoy celebration in the morning. My remarks have been misconstrued," he told reporters in Delhi.

"The comment is really derogatory," said Mamata Sharma, Chairperson of National Commission for Women(NCW) while BJP's women's wing chief Smriti Irani called the remarks "preposterous and disgusting."

Congress distanced itself from the remarks of Jaiswal.

"Since he has already clarified/explained/apologised, the matter should rest there," Congress spokesman Manish Tiwari told reporters in Delhi.

"The Congress party is led by a lady. And though who should be in the Cabinet is a prerogative of the Prime Minister, both Manmohan Singh and the Congress chief should think whether they want to have somebody with such a feudal mindset in the cabinet," BJP's Nirmala Sitharaman said.

"We can judge the standard of Congress on the basis of these utterances, how low can they go," she added.

NCW's Mamata Sharma said the panel will write to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in protest against the comments. She, however, said there is no move to send a notice to Jaiswal to seek his explanation.

Prominent women activist Poornima Advani described as "absolutely absurd" the remark which exposed the "perversity" in the mind of the the minister. Such comments from people holding public office are unwarranted, she said.

This statement by the Minister is partly true.Imagine a nagging wife eating your brains when you return home from work.Is that charm ? In most cases the wife has nothing good to say to the husband when he returns home. It could be only complaints of the home or a jealousy factor because she compares him to a wealthy neighbour who is flashing around either in his car or his wallet ( but this could all loan money which this wife doesn't know !! )

He is talking about congress and its marriage with other coalition parties. Days gone by the marriage become stale and there is no charm not mentioning the threat from Mamta's divorce from the party. it is true now India not qualified for semi's the charm of victory against Pakistan is fading. Otherwise for those who are not aware of who Jaiswal is, this controversy will lime light him in the dark of congress rule.

What's wrong in that comment?:O it's as simple as we speak normally. do we not speak worst than that. that too look at the context he spoke. that's why we are lacking growth by giving priority to the thing which do not even require mild attention. we can never be growing as the western countries do as we can never be social as they are.

It is not that bad statement. In the movie, even worst than this statement they making. Moreover, womens instead of commeting for such a small statement, instead they could have oppose the unwanted appearnces in the movie by its actresses. Why they are suppoorting such actress who acts in their bare body and they get high profile in the society. If the women have some sorts of principle, they have to oppose the body exhibition in the movie also. Or they should keep these actresses in distance.

I standby the Minister's remark. He had guts to spell it out. If our male readers commenting against what he said, I would say they are hypocrites. It is a fact that over time, women loose their pleasant appearance faster than men's look. But our culture is that we believe in one wife and live with her for ever, no matter how she looks over a period of time. Who does not want a younger looking wife? But no choice.

Well, it is just my view, no offence whatsoever.

His already blackened face, could have done without his remark.Haul him over the coals, not just for his remarks- but for the way he has sought to measure the 'excitement' in relation to marriage. What does he look like now and what does he think? A full blown sugar cane stick or a heap of molass? An Union Minister should really 'know' what and what not to speak in public forums! Wonder how Madam will react to this? Manmohanji would however have cautioned him with these words- Jaara Kuch Dekkhe Bola Karo Jaiswalji, Nahin to Garam 'Koyla' jaise words swallow karne padenge...!!
