Mangalore: 19-Year-Old Engineering Student Drowns in Quarry Pit

Mangalore, Sep 24: In a tragic incident, a 19-year-old boy drowned in a quarry pit after he stepped in for a swim near Bandasaale in Neermarga on Sunday September 23.
The deceased is identified as Tejas Bhat, hailing from Madikeri. Four other boys who accompanied him are said to be safe.
Tejas was an engineering student and was residing in a hostel. It is learnt that he had come out of the hostel without the permission of the hostel warden.
It is learnt that Tejas along with four other friends had left the hostel around 9 am and the incident came to light at around 5 pm after his friends informed the locals.
As soon as the information reached Hameed, a local panchayat member and Melwin D’Souza, ZP member, they informed the rural police station and fire brigade personnel of Pandeshwar.
Poovappa, a fireman along with other officials like Ramesh, Chandrakanth, Hiriyaana visited the spot and retrieved the body.
Around 30 feet of water was accumulated in the large quarry pit due to rains and sources said that the students used to regularly visit the quarry for a swim.
The body was taken to Wenlock hospital at night and rural police are investigating the case.
