Muslims Protest in Athens over Anti-Islam Film

Athens, Sep 24 (IANS): Muslim protesters took to the streets of the Greek capital to denounce a film deemed insulting to Islam, and briefly clashed with police, Xinhua reported.

About 700 protesters took part in the first demonstration held in Greece over the film that has led to strong reactions from Muslims in several countries in the past two weeks.

Chanting slogans such as "Allahu Akbar", and raising banners that read "Punish mockers of our Prophet", the protesters gathered in a central square in Athens.

Minor clashes broke out, when anti-riot police did not allow the protesters to gather in front of the US embassy building to prevent possible violent acts. Demonstrators threw bottles at police who retaliated by firing tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd.
