Mangalore: Young Journo Sandhya D’Souza Bags Sarojini Naidu National Award

Mangalore, Sep 23: Mangalore's young journalist Sandhya D’Souza has been chosen for the prestigious ‘Sarojini Naidu National Award-2012’ for her special report on Panchayat Raj and women.
The award will be conferred on Sandhya at a function to be held at New Delhi on October 2. The award, instituted by the global organization 'The Hunger Project' comprises a cash prize of Rs 2 lac and a citation.
Ronald Anil Fernandes and Guruvappa Balepuni had bagged this prestigious award. Sandhya will be the third journalist from Dakshina Kannada to receive the honour.
The award winning article 'Laila Ladies Ensure 'Safety'' speaks on how 'a small group of ladies in Laila village of Dakshina Kannada district are striving to ensure that every rural woman maintains menstrual hygiene'. The story details how the Isiri-Self Help Group unit, which manufactures hygienic and low-cost sanitary napkins for women, has enhanced women's health and given them employment at the same time. The article was published in Deccan Herald English daily on June 1, 2012.
24-year old Sandhya D’Souza pursued her studies at St Aloysius College and joined Deccan Herald newspaper as reporter/sub editor in the year 2010.
