Former RSS Chief K Sudarshan Dead

Nagpur, Sep 15 (IANS): Kuppali Sitaramaiyya Sudarshan, who headed the RSS for much of the period Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister, died early Saturday in Raipur after suffering a cardiac arrest, RSS officials said.

Sudharshan, 81, the first RSS chief from southern India, is survived by a brother and a sister. His last rites will be held in Nagpur Sunday afternoon.

His body will be brought by flight to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur and will be kept there to enable people to pay their last respects, a RSS official said.

Sudarshan had reached Raipur Thursday from Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh to attend the release of a book by Bharatiya Janata Party Rajya Sabha MP Gopal Vyas. The book release function was held Friday evening.

On Saturday morning, Sudarshan went for his morning walk and returned to the RSS office, Jagriti Mandal, in Pandri area. He had been ailing for some time and was always under the care of an attendant.

Then he began to meditate while the attendant returned to his room.

After some time, some RSS volunteers noticed that Sudarshan had fallen down while meditating.

Believing him to be asleep, they shook him but he was motionless. Later, a doctor was summoned who confirmed that Sudarshan had died.

Born in Raipur into a Kannada Brahmin family June 18, 1931, Sudarshan studied to be a telecom engineer at Sagar University.

In 1953, at age 23, he plunged into social service as an RSS activist. He remained with the group till he breathed his last.

Serving as pracharak for six decades, he became its sarasanghachalak in 2000 succeeding Rajju Bhaiya, to become the first south Indian to head the organisation.

A student of Marxism, he was a strong votary of 'Swadeshi'. He also took a major initiative to reach out to Muslim and Christian communities.

He stepped down from the post in March 2009 due to poor health, and Mohan Bhagwat succeeded him.

In August, he had briefly gone missing during his morning walk in Mysore.

Great loss to Bharat. True Patriot even after being so qualified given his entire life to the social cause. He was ever young and active till his death. For instance, there was an RSS meeting in Assam and at the end of the meeting a large number of delegates went on a trip to Parashuram Kund. Parashuram Kund is a place where the river Brahmaputra is nestled amid hills. Even at its slowest, the swirling river can sweep a person away off his feet. One has to climb 300 steps on a steep gradient to worship at the temple. The kund has freezing cool water.

Some of the ‘black-haired oldies’ preferred to give the climbing up a miss and others refused to even sprinkle the water on their bodies due to excessive chill. But, 78-year-old Sudarshanji, who had emerged from surgeries, not just climbed up the 300 steps effortlessly, but also dared to venture into the freezing cold waters. In fact, he had a full-bath there. All this, after a grueling four-hour bus travel on a pot-holed road!. He tried to change the perception of minority about RSS in a nationalistic view. He has already donated his eyes to madav netralay in Raypur.

May his soul rest in eternal peace. Even though his parents were from Karnataka with Kannada mother tongue, since Sudarshanji was born and brought up in Raipur chattisgad, he was not able to speak Kannada. Hindi fanatics should note the greatness of this Kannadiga. Of course he was not knowing Sanscrit also.

    Graet Leader, Rest in Peace.
While being a true patriot and a Hindu, I have observed him having respect for all religions. For eg., On the occasion of Eid al-Fitr this year an interesting news item was related to Eid and Eid Prayers. It so happened that in the morning of Eid al-Fitr on 20th August former Sarsangh chalak of RSS, KS Sudarshan said to his security staff deputed at his residence at RSS Complex Samidha that he wanted to go to Tajul Masjid to offer the Eid Prayers.

The security staff members were perturbed the police was informed police officers tried to convince him that there was huge traffic on the roads leading to Tajul Masajid and the Eid Prayers had already been offered there. But Sudarshan stuck to his idea. At last Urban development and administration minister Babulal Gaur, who was offering Eid greetings to Muslims out side Tajul Masajid at that time, was called in. He also told Sudarshan that Eid Prayers had already been offeredat Tajul Masajid.

Then he took him to the house of one of his Muslim friends where Mr. Sudarshan offered Eid greetings to Muslims and enjoyed siwaiyan. The Hindustan Times (21st August) has clearly mentioned the words “namaz” and prayer while other papers used the word Eid “greetings”. However the common thing in all the reports is that KS Sudarshan wanted to go the historical TajulMasajid that day.
