Mangalore: Corporator Gretta Rebello Bags National, International Awards

Mangalore, Sep 14: Gretta Rebello, who is the present corporator from 34 Kadri - Shivbagh ward was recently conferred two prestigious awards by Bhishma Narain Singh, former governor of Tamil Nadu and Assam at a seminar held in Delhi.
It was during the seminar on “Economic Growth and National Integration” that Gretta Rebello was conferred with the award “Bharath Jyothi” for meritorious service, outstanding performance and remarkable role. This award was given by India International Friendship Society.
The second award conferred on Gretta Rebello was “Glory of India Gold Medal” for individual excellence in recognition of sterling merit, excellent performance and outstanding contribution for the progress of the nation and worldwide. This award was given by International Institute of Success and Awareness.
Soft-spoken, Gretta Rebello has been the corporator of 34 Kadri-Shivbagh Ward since 2009 and will continue till February 2013. A resident of Bejai, Mangalore, Gretta Rebello has been a social worker and has helped a number of families and youth by understanding their problems and through counseling. She has been taking keen interest in the development of her ward and providing better amenities such as improvement of roads.
Gretta Rebello has been the president of the Mahila Wing of Dakshina Kannada District of the Indian National Trade Union Congress(INTUC) since 2002. She has organized seminars on Beedi workers with a view to enable them to avail benefits from various government schemes. Working for the construction workers, Rebello brought them together and obtained ID cards for them from the labour commissioner of DK. She has been helping the marginalized sections of the society such as widows, handicapped and senior citizens to procure their pension and medical help.
For her leadership qualities, Gretta Rebello has been appointed to various posts, the most prominent being nomination as the member of the Central Advisory Committee, Ministry of Labour and Employment (Govt of India); vice-president of DK District Congress Minority Department; and vice-president of the Konkani Natak Sabha (Mangalore).
Gretta Rebello has written, directed and choreographed more than 100 dance groups in Kannada and Konkani including dance dramas.
Gretta Rebello is the wife of Clarence Rebello, an ex-serviceman and an avid hockey player – the game which brought him laurels for his performance in his heydays. Clarence and Gretta are blessed with talented children Shamila, Suraj, and Sonia. Suraj is the past president of MCCP – Muscat and a driving force behind many successful events and motivator for youth movement in Sts Peter and Paul Church – Ruwi. Sonia, a qualified choreographer, has performed for many national and community cultural events and trained many dance aspirants.
