Digvijaya hits out at CAG on coal issue

New Delhi, Aug 31 (IBNS): Congress general Secretary Digvijaya Singh on Friday slammed the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) and said it is sensationalising the coal block allocation issue.

"I have never attacked any constitutional authority in my life. But if you see CAG's past record before 2004, they never sensationalised any records,"  Digvijaya told reporters on Friday.

"It is the first time that people from CAG and not the CAG himself have gone to the press. If they want to set a precedent, they should realise what they are doing," he said.

The coal report of the CAG has pointed finger at the loss-making coal block allocations when the portfolio was held by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The report by the CAG said 25 private companies received benefits of around Rs 1.86 lakh crore through of coalblock allocations in various states.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain criticised Digvijaya for verbally attacking the CAG and said it is an 'old habit' of the senior Congress leader.

"The Congress has always criticised those who have voiced opinions against it. The Congress appreciates only those who suit them. The Congress attacked Constitutional bodies and its members. It is Digvijaya Singh's old habit,"  Hussain said.

The PM on Friday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the coal block allocation issue and said he could not get involved in a 'slanging match'.

Singh said he needs to maintain the dignity of the 'office of the PM'.

"I have to maintain the dignity of the office of the PM. I cant get into a tu-tu main-main or in a slanging match," Singh told reporters on board the Air India One flight on his way back to New Delhi from Tehran.

Singh is returning to India on Friday after attending the 16th NAM Summit in Tehran.

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley said the UPA government is the 'most corrupt government' in the history of the country.

"The UPA is the most corrupt government ever," Jaitley said while addressing a rally at Jantar Mantar here.

He said the Prime Minister should take moral responsibility and resign.

"We are demanding that the PM should take moral responsibility and resign," Jaitley said.

"The BJP is also demanding that the allotment of the 142 blocks should be cancelled. These should be auctioned through competitive bidding," he said.

The leaders made the comments on a day when both Houses of the Indian Parliament were adjourned for the day on Friday over the coal scam.

This was the eighth consecutive day when the Parliament was adjourned as India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) disrupted the proceedings and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the issue of coal block allocation during his tenure as the coal minister.
