Udupi, Aug 28: The CMC (Udupi City Municipal Council) meeting  concentrated on debating the issue of the plastic ban in the city on Tuesday August 28.

Udupi CMC president Kiran Kumar said that use of plastic carry bags will be completely banned in the city limits from September 15.

"Udupi has always been attractive with its beachs and tourist spots, so it is the responsibility of the public to keep the city clean. Maintain the name ‘Temple city’, as per government rules below 40 micro plastic should not be used at all for any reason and above 40 Micro plastic ban will depend on the state or district.  Examples like Goa, Ooty, Mysore and Madikkeri have banned all kind of plastic." Kiran Kumar said.

"Jobs must be given to associations involved with creating better bags like the  mahila abhivrudhi sangha to make paper/nylon bags " he said

For the above statements some counter claims were raised by few members such as before banning the plastic bag it is important to find a better solution for the same like if the city has enough paper it can make nylon bags if not make arrangements for the same before implementing the rule.

Time should be given to the people to get adjusted with the rule. It is also important to make the people understand the consequences of using plastic than just banning it without the knowledge, which also can irritate the public.

Bhujanga Park and Poora Bhavana will be inaugurated by the CM end of September or October first week, Kiran Kumar announced.

There was also a discussion on government and religious buildings coming up without the permission of the CMC. For which he said that the permission is definitely required and he will look into the issue.

"Jobs must be given to associations involved with creating better bags like the mahila abhivrudhi sangha to make paper/nylon bags " he said

Has the CMC or anyone else given a thought to the effect on environment due manufacture and use of paper and nylon bags?

Nylon is made form petro chemicals and is non biodegradable. Manufacture of nylon creates nitrous oxide which is a green house gas and is about 300 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide. It uses a large amount of water and is resouce hungry.

Manufacture of paper and cotton is equally bad for the environment. The pollution they cause cannot be seen by the naked eye and when the effect is seen it will be too late. Euthrofication of water bodies is another effect of making paper. Trees are the major sink of carbon and bringing it down is not a clever thing to do.

Would suggest to check it out, it would be an eye opener!

This is just a way to say udupi CMC is doing something, we call this a temple city, people who come to this city frequently ask where is it, all over the world Udupi is known for the temple town, but all four roads leading towards it are the dirtiest, with 1000 years old buildings almost on the way to collapse not repaired because of vote bank politics we talk about the beaches and the tourist, a joke again first beautify the temple town with broad roads toward the temple demolish all old building and make our temple town a monument worth remembering for people who visit, one hotel and the dirtiest, udupi is known for hotels and the temple town doesnot have a decent Vegetarian hotel, if the CMC which boast of collecting taxes, and other dues from the public promtly then its high time to deliver, I am not saying they are not doing here and there it is done and more can be done banning plastic is not a great achievment, people should be given enough time to adjust to it, especially in the fish market etc

    I agree with concerned Indian.
However i would like to point out plastics that are Bio degradable/water soluble/etc and which confirm to International environment standards are being manufactured right here in good old Mangalore city. To bring in a blanket ban without understanding or knowing the technicalities indicates the lack of knowledge of the concerned authorities. Enough and more technical papers and reports from various govt agencies and independent third party laboratories have over and over again proved that biodegradable plastics is the best material for the environment and have called all governments for a policy change and to ensure that biodegradable plastics are used. So i request the concerned authorities to educate themselves and the public of the availability and the benefits by reading the latest reports on biodegradable plastics by various organizations and scientists such as Prof Dr Gerard Scott and like.

Illiterate leaders! When you do not know how to produce eco-friendly plastic and how to have a check on spurious products...all you do is dub all plastic as 'bad' and ban it. Height of ignorance!!
The trouble is we have lost all honesty and ethics in business and many manufacturing units produce low grade and recycled plastic. While the West goes ahead with bio degradable as well as water soluble and photo degradable plastics, we have ignorant fools of Indian politics... the back benchers,(If at all they have gone through schooling) who end up banning plastics.

A very good move. There is nothing that people cannot adhere to. Couple of years ago, the usage of plastic was nil or very minimal. Now a days, each and every item is delivered in plastic bags whether you like it or not. When once the ban is implemented, people will find an alternative source like paper
bag, jute bag, cloth bag etc., as was the practice in the past.

Udupi District can become a model district for other cities to follow by introducing such ban orders and protecting the environment.
