Mangalore, Aug 27: Commemorating the feast of Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified (Mariam Bowardy), a Eucharistic Liturgy was celebrated here in the Chapel of the Sisters of Cloistered Carmel, Kankanady on Saturday August 25.
During the sermon, Fr Santhosh Kamath emphasized to follow the footsteps of Mariam Bowardy, explaining her life which she committed to God and to her work.
Explaining about Mariam Bowardy, he added that the Blessed Mary of Jesus Crucified was baptized in the name Mariam Bowardy, who was born in a village in Galilee.
In the span of her two years in Mangalore (1870-1872), apart from her routine spiritual practices, she worked for the construction of the convent.
Earlier, as the cloistered carmel sisters did not have their own convent, they lived at St Anne's Convent, Ruzai. However, Sr Mary with the help of benefactor Matilda and her father, received financial aid to construct the convent.
In the year 1983, on November 13, Pope John Paul II declared her as blessed.
Fr Henry Sequeira, Chancellor, Mangalore Diocese and Fr Melwin D’Cunha (OCD) were the concelebrant during the mass.
As part of the celebration, every Wednesday at 5.30 pm the novena is held in honour of blessed Mariam Bowardy.
