Mangalore, Aug 17: St Joseph Engineering College football team won the prestigious Independence Cup professional college inter collegiate football tournament held from August 7-14, organized by the D K Football Association at Nehru Maidan, Mangalore.
In this tournament leading Engineering, Medical and other professional college students also participated.
SJEC team won the first round match against Mangalore Institute of Fire and Safety by 3-0 goals. Lerroy, Azeem and Ashish Rebello scored the goals for the team, which lead the team to the quarter finals. SJEC boys won the quarter final match against Sarosh Institute of Hotel Management by a margin of 2-0, Conan Fernandes and Brendon D’Cruz scored the winning goals, putting the team into semi finals of the tournament.
Team SJEC won the most crucial semifinal match against Fr Muller Medical College by a margin of 1-0, with the only goal of the match, scored by Brendon D’Cruz, which lead the team to the final match of the tournament. The most important final match was played against Canara Engineering College. Both the teams were 1-1 till the end of 90 minutes, with Azeem’s most valuable goal.
The match entered a very interesting stage, where the win would be decided by the penalty shoot, at this crucial juncture Ashish Rebello, Conan Fernandes, Lerroy, Saurabh Prakash converted the penalty shoots into goals and Conan Fernandes saved the 2 penalty shoots.
With this SJEC boys created history by winning the match and the SJEC team emerged as a new champions in 2012 Independence cup.
