Raipur, Aug 4 (IANS): Chhattisgarh's opposition Congress Friday formed a five-member panel to probe into allegations that policemen went on rampage Aug 1 at a weekly market in a Maoist-dominated area.
"There are widespread allegations against policemen that they mercilessly beat up people at a weekly market in Orchha in Narayanpur district after Maoists killed a policeman," a Congress statement said.
The party said a five-member committee, headed by former minister Shiv Netam, would visit Orchha to prepare a report on what happened that day.
Dozens of tribals and traders showed injury marks to the district authorities and complained that they were tortured by policemen Wednesday after a policeman was killed by Maoists in full public view at the market.
