Udupi, Jul 23:
Kannada Sahitya Parishat (KSP) opposing the ‘State government’s decision to allow compulsory English as a medium of instruction from sixth standard in government schools in the state’, staged a protest in front of the clock tower, near service bus stand here on July 21.

2000 year old legendary language Kannada is slowly losing its value because of the new education system by the government. 96 year old KSP before and after independence fights to keep Kannada rituals ever green and has now reached to the ultimate exrent such that not only the KSP members, but also writers, poets, intellectuals and Kannada sangha and samsthe came together in the protest.

The concept of uniform pattern of education has remained a distant dream all these years and seems to remain the same forever although the state has used it as its motto.

Government and policy makers have failed to understand the intricacies of educating kids in the mother tongue. At present Kannada language is in a bad condition and there is need for an integrated approach by the government towards promoting Kannada language as a medium of instruction.

Udupi Kannada Sahitya Parishath president Neelavara Surendra Adiga said that it is committed to promote Kannada language as a medium of instruction. Kannada language is made scapegoat against the fondness for English language.

Recently 10,000 Kannada medium schools have been shut down saying that there are insufficient students, if the situation continues to arise the Kannada medium schools will be destroyed. Above all, getting 345 schools for compulsory English medium as instruction from sixth standard is the worst part he added.

English could be a subject not a medium for the student he insisted.

H Shantharam Ital, Mahalaxmi Nagarathna , V H Bhat, Uppangala Ram Baht were present in the protest.

Dear Protestors, please save the future generation from your thoughtless actions. I am proud to be a kannadiga and I freely speak Kannada whenever I meet a compatriate but with due respect to this language, it will not help the people when they move out of Karnataka. English is an universal language. Unless you are fluent in reading, writing and conversing, you will be left out in the rat race for jobs. I give you a simple example one of my colleague is a CA but being a tamilian he is not fluent in English and hence forced to work as a Accounts Manager whereas another colleague who is a CA but not as good in Accounts but very fluent in English is the Finance Manager. Hence, you will observe that international language plays a vital role in deciding the job structure. Please do not jeopardise the future of your children by insisting on a ban on English medium. For your kind information I would like to inform you that I too studied in Kannada Medium but since we were educated in a convent, we had a better base as far as English was concerned and hence I can write this note for your perusal. Good luck to all our future students.

Because of this regional politics India is divided. If u r in Maharastra the buses display in Marathi, in TN Tamil etc. Because of this petty regionalism, u r depriving the students of Govt schools a chance to learn English. Any regional language has got no relevance outside the State. Think Global. Let children learn English as a medium of instruction from 5th onwards besides Kannada n Hindi.Becuase of these language fanatics India is suffering. Think Global

Kannada - pustakada bhadane kai. Home learnt Konkani, society tulu and school kannda > what a mess !!!
National again Hindi - someone fighting Kankani to medium and other one fighting for Kannada and 3rd one Tulu - don't mess up your life. Keep your language as option and English should be medium of teaching and learning - we are living in a global world. While many children life is messed up becuase core subjects like Math, Science not focused by schools. Don't insist any langauge unless someone is willing to learn or wanting to learn.

To all Hon'able protestors , what will be the medium of for Professional courses and Companies outside the state . Hope God gives you light to think about the future generation with Generous mind and to stop utlising rusted , useless thinking that never helped anyone . For your better understanding Mother tongue needs to practised at Home and not mandatory to be pracitised in Schools
