PM calls Mamata, urges TMC attendance at UPA meeting

New Delhi/Kolkata, July 12 (IBNS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday called up estranged Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and requested that her party should take part in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) meeting on Saturday.

The PM phoned the West Bengal chief minister in the evening.

Reports said Railway Minister Mukul Roy will take part in the meeting. After the call of the PM, Mamata Banerjee asked Roy to attend the meeting, media reports said.

Trinamool Congress and Congress, the two partners in the state and at the centre, are at loggerheads of late over many issues, including the Presidential election.

Mamata Banerjee has so far ruled out supporting Congress leader Pranab Mukherjee for the post of President.

Mamata Banerjee is also unlikely to support Hamid Ansari for a second term as Vice-President of India and instead she had indicated names like Gopal Krishna Gandhi and Krishna Bose.

The PM has meanwhile again spoken to Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) general secretary Prakash Karat for supporting Hamid Ansari as the President.
