Panaji, Jul 4: A Goa-based green-Non Government Organisation has filed a complaint with the state authorities targeting the illegal filling of mangroves in Panaji city, which has been reportedly conducted by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP).

Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA), an NGO, which had successfully raised a public movement against the objectionable regional plan 2012, couple of years ago, has now filed a complaint with the Town and Country Planning department for removal of the mangroves.

GBA convenor Sabina Martins, has said that according to the land use plan, the area, located on the outskirts of Panaji, has been shown as a non-development area.

“The area is shown as Non Development area in both the Panaji ODP and Regional Plan 2021. However massive mangrove filling is taking place despite complaints,” she said.

Sources in the town and country planning department stated that the area has been filled to make way for the garbage dumping facility by CCP.

GBA delegation which met Town and Country Planning Officers today were told by the officials that `no permission was given to fill the land by the department.’
