Mangalore: Man Gets Three Years in Prison for Harassing Wife

Mangalore, Jun 30: Kiran Johnson Periera (32) from Arkula in Merlapadavu has been sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment by Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court for harassing his wife, Philomena Velani Serrao (27).
The couple got married on February 23, 2006. Sources say that they have not been in good terms ever since their first year of marriage as he reportedly started ill treating his wife.
On September 21, 2006 Philomena logged a complaint in Kankanady rural police station. KU Belliyappa, PSI investigated the case and a report was submitted to the court.
After six years, Renuka Devdas Raykar, judge of JMFC court awarded three years of rigorous imprisonment to Johnson.
On behalf of prosecution, senior public prosecutor Shekar Shetty and assistant prosecutor Mohan Kumar contested the case.
Even after the complaint was logded, it is said that Johnson did not stop harassing his wife. Philomena was working in a call center in Morgan's Gate, and every day before and after her work he would try to persuade her not to appear in the court. When she did not comply, on June 20, 2011, he kidnapped her with the help of his friends.
She was travelling by the company cab from her home when her husband stopped the vehicle and gagged her forcefully. He was accompanied by four other associates. After 40 hours of search operation by police, they were caught in Uppinangady. Johnson along with Vasanth Kumar, Dharmaprakash, Sathish, Mohandas and Yogish were arrested in this regard.
Johnson even threatened Philomena’s parents to withdraw case. Taking all these into account, the court passed the judegment.
The maximum imprisonment for torturing one's wife is three years, which is what Johnson was awarded.
