Ajman: ‘New Horizons in Cardiology’ Conference held at GMU

Ajman, Jun 29: The Department of Cardiology, GMC Hospital and Gulf Medical University recently hosted a Conference on ‘New Horizons in Cardiology – From Guidelines to Clinical Practice”.
In his introductory talk Dr. Pradeep Kumar Gupta, Consultant Cardiologist, Saif & IBHO Hospital, RAK, UAE, Associate Professor and Associate Dean, RAK Medical & Health Sciences University, Vice President Emirates Chapter summarized all the latest guidelines in the management of hypertension. He also illustrated the various modalities needed to diagnose & follow up for patients with hypertension. Not only that Dr. Gupta with his wide knowledge even explained & illustrated the various treatment options offered to hypertensive patients from non-pharmacological, to pharmacological to surgical options.  All these information were shared in a simple way but with a dynamic interaction with the audience.

Dr. Ehab Esheiba, Lecturer & Specialist in Cardiology, Head of Cardiology Department, GMC Hospital, Gulf Medical University revisited the latest guidelines on antibiotic prophylaxis against infective endocarditis for cardiac patients before surgical or dental procedures. He emphasized during his simple and educative talk on the reality of daily clinical practice and what is needed to be followed by the clinicians and all healthcare providers.  He also stated the fact that there is still a need to spread the message to all healthcare providers as well as the patients themselves.

Dr. Anil Kumar, Consultant Cardiologist and Head of Department of Cardiology, Belhoul Specialty Hospital highlighted the latest guidelines on the management of acute heart failure and its complications in a very easy interactive session. The talk emphasized on the latest diagnostic tests used in an emergency situation and the various modalities used to treat.  He explained and illustrated non-pharmacological to pharmacological to interventional to surgical options and the indications for each.

Dr. Mohamed Fathi, Lecturer & Specialist in Cardiology, GMC Hospital, Gulf Medical University revisited the latest guidelines applied in the evaluation, diagnosis & management of patients who have abnormalities in their lipid profile (dyslipidemia). From high LDL levels, to high triglycerides, to low HDL & mixed Dyslipidemia, Dr. Fathi clearly explained the target goals for each and the indications to start a specific treatment regimens depending upon the all over risk of each individual patient. He also briefed on the newly emerged drugs for Dyslipidemia.

Mr. Kumaraguruparan Gopal, Lecturer, College of Allied Health Sciences, GMU - Ajman emphasized on the role of the physiotherapist in cardiac rehabilitation in cardiac patients. He updated the audience with the latest guidelines on the subject & explained the role of physiotherapist as a part of health care providers’ team in the short term & long term management of cardiac patients.

Dr. Mukesh Kumar.Pharm D., College of Pharmacy, GMU Ajman summarized in a very nice presentation the era of the newly emerged (and emerging) drugs used as “blood thinners” in various cardiac conditions. He clearly explained the mechanism of action of each new molecule of the antithrombotic and anticoagulant drugs. He also updated the audience that many of these drugs were approved and recommended by the guidelines for management of certain cardiac conditions. He also stated the fact that although most of these novel agents were recently released, yet UAE is considered one of the first countries of the region to provide them in the market.

Prof. Gita Ashok Raj, Provost of GMU gave away special mementos to all the invited speakers. 
More than 100 specialists attended the conference which was accredited by the Ministry of Health for 6 CME hours.
