Kasargod, Jun 28: A missed call was all it took to get herself into trouble. The call sparked off a friendship, went on to become an affair, ending up with alleged sexual harassment and rape, not by one but three men.
As per the complaint filed by a 20-year-old girl in Badiyadka police station, she was misused by the men on the pretext of marriage, and even robbed of her jewellery.
Acting on the complaint, circle inspector Babu Periyamjath and his team arrested Sudhakar (36) of Marpanadka and Ravichandra alias Ravi (26) of Nirchal Bela near Nirchal. They have been awarded judicial custody till July 10.
The third accused, Mohammed Haleef (40) of Kannur, is absconding and search for him is on. The complaint states that Haleef not only raped her but also stole her gold jewellery.
Since 2009, the victim, a student of tailoring in Marpanadka, was taken to various places and repeatedly raped, stated the complaint.
The girl had reportedly purchased a mobile SIM card from an outlet in Badiyadka. Sudhakar got her number from this particular outlet, and gave her a missed call. This in return developed into friendship, and later ‘love’.
Regretting the blunder, Sudhakar admitted before the police that he took her to different places and used her sexually on the pretext of marrying her. In addition, Sudhakar passed on her number to his friend Ravichandra Shetty, who in turn used her sexually as well.
Her number also got into the hands of Mohammed Haleef, who befriended the girl. Once they became intimate, he brought her to one of the hotels in Mangalore. Apart from allegedly raping her, he added some intoxicating powder in her food, and when she was unconscious, he reportedly stole her one-and-a-half sovereigns of gold jewellery.
On their way home, Haleef dropped her in Kumble, and he got down in Kannur. While walking towards her house, she realized that her jewelllery was missing and contacted Haleef. He replied that the jewellery was safe with him and promised to return it on their next meeting.
For their next outing, he asked her to wear a mangalasutra, perhaps so that she may appear to be his wife. Accordingly, she asked a neighbour for her a mangalasutra and then left for Mangalore with Haleef. However, he is again said to have sexually exploited her in one of the apartments in Mangalore, and disappeared with the mangalasutra.
After Haleef vanished, the girl approached the police for help. Investigations are on and police are on the lookout for Haleef.
