Monsoon Gashes Goa, Life Out of Gear in Tourist State

Goa has been witnessing incessant rains for last two days, which has affected the normal life in the state.

Traffic jams are seen on the roads in the main cities, while fire and emergency department is busy attending disaster calls. A senior official from the department revealed that they have attended more than 100 calls during last two days.

On Sunday itself there were 63 calls from different parts of the state, which were attended by fire and emergency services. Majority of these calls were related to the uprooting of trees and they falling on the houses.

One person, who was angling (fishing) at Betul village, 50 kms away from here, died when coconut tree came crashing on him.

There was a flood like situation in some parts of the state and situation is expected to worsen, if rains continue lashing state for next 24 hours.

Indian Meteorological department Goa incharge K V Singh said that the total seasonal rainfall has touched 15.9 inches. Quepem taluka, which is one of the rural areas, received 4.6 inches of rain on Sunday.

The streets were flooded with water in the capital city of Panaji. The traffic jam was witnessed throughout the day on the highway. Corporation of city of Panaji Mayor Vaidehi Naik was seen inspecting the situation as rain water flooded few of the city schools.

IMD has predicted that the rains will continue lashing the state for next 24 hours. People have been advised to remain away from the sea as the waves are violent due to the monsoon season.
