Islamabad, Jun 18 (IANS): Fauzia Wahab, member of parliament and a senior member of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, has died after suffering from post-surgery complications following a gall bladder operation. She was 56.
Wahab underwent the surgery at a hospital in Karachi, Geo News reported.
The Nation daily said Wahab went into coma at the intensive care unit of the hospital.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani have condoled Wahab's demise. The party has announced a 10-day mourning period.
"She died while fighting to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions," Zardari said.
Born in 1956, Wahab was elected member of the National Assembly from Sindh in 2008. She was a close aide of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.
She was also interested in other fields, and acted in a TV serial "Kohar" aired in 1991-92.
