Panaji, Jun 11: After initial weak phase, the rains in Goa is all set to pick up the pace heralding the rainy season in this coastal state, an expert said here on Monday, June 11.

The South West Monsoons which had set in Goa on June 6 remained weak after raining for two days, K V Singh, Director, Goa centre of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), said.

The rains which has began with the full gush from Monday are likely to continue, he said.

“It rained in certain parts of the state. But the capital city of Panaji remained dry for last two days,” he said, stating that the border taluka of Pernem recorded 4 cm rains on Sunday, when Panaji had only 0.3 mm rains.

Singh said that for two days after monsoon had set in, there were heavy rains because of cyclonic circulation off Goa-Karnataka coast. “But later the current became weak,” he added.

The IMD hopes that the rains will intensify now from this week onwards.

For the first few days of monsoons, compared to last year, Singh said, the rainfall was low. Last year, the first few four days had recorded 239.8 mm of rains compared to 176 mm recorded this year.

Goa had received 296 cm rains during the last monsoon season, which had prolonged even till December.
