Puttur, Jun 11: Nithyananda may be having a tough time proving his holiness and credentials as a godman, but there are quite a few he seems to have 'inspired'.
Nehrunagar in Puttur saw its own version of a self-styled godman, who was arrested on Sunday June 10 for cheating people in the name of god.

The arrested 'Swami' has been identified as Darshan, a resident of Puttur. He was a painter by profession but took to wearing saffron robes and attracting gullible people, who began approaching him with their problems. They went to him for ‘prasada’, put forth offerings and shared their problems. Somehow, with a clever intuition and wily guesses, he managed to find solutions for them. He reportedly minted more money as a 'godman' than as a painter!
His true colours were exposed when, on Saturday June 9, he assured a woman that she would get a marriage proposal soon, and asked her to visit his house alone in the evening for the 'prasada'.
Suspicious of his intentions, the girl went to his house, but along with her family. They took Darshan to task, demanding why he had asked the girl to come alone. They also lodged a complaint with the Puttur police who arrested him and examined his credentials.
He was later let off with a stern warning.
