Udupi, Jun 8: “After Independence, India had a dream for total, cent percent education, which will come true soon. Children from 6 to 16 years should get complete education through the compulsory education system. Economically, India has now improved its position so much that within a few years we will reach the top position. Now, as per statistics, in India, 13.5 percent children are educated and in 2015 it will reach 15 percent as it will go on increasing,” said Congress MP and All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Oscar Fernandes.
He was addressing a press meet at Congress Bhavan on Friday June 8, during his visit to the district to campaign for Congress candidates for the upcoming MLC election. Polling will be held in the graduates’ and teachers' constituencies for the legislative council seats on Sunday June 10 from 8 am to 4 pm.
“The government will concentrate on technical and vocational education and 50,000 training centers will be started for this. The party’s vision is to provide 100 percent education in India in the formal (professional or IT) field,” added Fernandes.
“About 6 to 7 percent of the people are in jobs and the target is 9 percent. People are less in agriculture and this is proof of economic development,” he said. For all these reasons, he requested the people to vote for Congress
Earlier, Fernandes held a district-wide campaign on behalf of Congress candidates S P Dinesh and Ramesh Jayashya, who will be contesting in the forthcoming legislative council south west graduates’ and teachers’ constituency.
He solicited votes by visiting the teaching staff in different education institutions located in Kaup, Shankarapura, and Shirva localities, urging the voters to cast their precious votes for Congress candidates. “Although BJP candidates were winning successively in the past, they have not addressed the grievances of the majority of voters for lack of interest,” added Fernandes.
State former minister Vasant Salian, Blossom Fernandes, KPCC secretary M A Gafoor, District Congress committee president Kaup Divakar Shetty, Ignatius D’Souza, Ida D’Souza, taluk panchayat member Krishna Poojary, Kaup gram panchayat president Gangadar, Srikar Suvarna, Prakash Shetty, and Conrad Castelino were present on the occasion.
