Mangalore, Jun 6: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) officials have been raiding illegal businesses and unhygienic hotels across the city for the past several days. Their zeal has been appreciated by all and sundry, but on Wednesday June 6, it seemed like they went a bit overboard with their mission.
Acting on a tip-off, the MCC health officials intercepted an auto rickshaw in which a meat stall owner was allegedly transporting beef 'illegally' at Kankanady market.
The officials checked the meat thoroughly for the MCC seal, which would determine whether the beef was from MCC slaughter house or some other source.
The officials found the MCC seal, yet, to be doubly sure that the seal was not fake, the workers at the MCC slaughter house were summoned to the spot. The workers confirmed that the meat was from the slaughter house, and that the auto rickshaw had stopped there early in the morning to load the beef.
Also, Dr Ashok Kumar, a veterinary, was called to spot to inspect the meat.
Finding the beef in good condition and legal, the officials returned the beef to the man, but seized the auto rickshaw.
A case was registered in Kadri police station.
Of late, the MCC officials have been keeping an eye on illegal businesses in the city. In a series of raids, the officials swooped down on pani puri stalls, malls, shops, slaughter houses, street vendors and hotels across the city to ensure the legality of the businesses and their hygenic conditions. It is said prevention is always better than cure, and perhaps for that reason, MCC officials may be appreciated despite faltering!
