Mangalore, May 31: "Divisional railway manager Piyush Agarwal has promised to begin work on the underpass at Padil by November this year, after completing formalities of space allotment, tenders and so on," said MCC member Vijay Kumar Shetty to Daijiworld.
He spoke after briefing the media on the issues discussed at a meeting of MCC officials with the railway officials May 29. The meeting had been held as per the promise by the people's representatives on May 14, following the chaos and trouble that had erupted at Padil railway crossing when the gates did not open for a long time.
On Thursday, the briefing with the media was organized by the railway bridge struggle committee, Padil, at 6 pm near Darbar hill, Padil railway gate.
Speaking further, Shetty told Daijiworld that if the deadline is not adhered to, a major protest would be held near the railway gate. "A follow-up meeting regarding the progress of the work will be held every month at the venue," he added.
MCC member, Vijay Kumar Shetty, B M Madava, Vasanth Poojary, Ahmed Bava, Dr Annayya Kulal, Chandranath and Rajesh were among 60 members present at the meeting. All the points discussed on May 29 by the representatives with the DRM were briefed to the general public by the committee president B M Madava.
The major points discussed in the meeting are that 50 percent of the total expense has to be paid by the Mangalore City Corporation or the authorities concerned to the railway department. Tender for the construction work will be called in June or July. After the tender is passed, it will take at least one month for further progress. After all the formalities, the underpassing is expected to be ready within 8-10 months.
No construction work will be carried out in the rainy season. The present road or the railway gate will be completely shut down from the day of the commencement of the construction work and hence details about the temporary road have to be given to the railway department immediately by the authority.
MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, deputy speaker of legislative assembly Yogish Bhat, MCC members, Mohan Padil, Vijay Kumar Shetty, Sudhir Shetty, Dr Annayya Kulal, B M Madava and Ahmed Bava had a meeting with the railway DRM Piyush Agarwal, in Railway VIP lounge on May 29.
