Panaji, May 27: Goa’s one of the most visited Church, Basilica de Bom Jesus, has now decided to install sign-boards requesting visitors to wear decent clothes, rather than imposing the ban instantly.
Basilica de Bom Jesus, a church home for the relics of St Francis Xavier, situated 10 kms away from here in the town of Old Goa, will now request the visitors to dress decently, before entering into the premise.
Fr Savio Barretto, rector of the basilica, told PTI that the church management had meeting on Friday with the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), in which it was decided to soon install the board, other than directly imposing the ban on scantily-clad guests.
The parishioner of this church had objected to the inappropriately dressed tourists, who usually come during the masses.
Barretto said that imposing ban on the tourists with scantily-clad tourists might offend them. “First we will install the sign-board and see,” he said adding that Church is in search of proper words to be painted on the board, so that the tourists are not hurt.
The Church authorities, currently, have commissioned few staffers who are monitoring the indecently-dressed tourists. “We don’t object to them right now,” he said.
Two temples – Shree Manguesh temple (Mangueshi) and Mahalsa Narayani Temple (Mardol) -- were the first one to impose dress code in the state. The tourists with scantily-clad were not allowed to the enter in the temple. They were also taught about the etiquettes that one needs to adhere in the temple.
