Panaji, May 16:
Ahead of Cortalim by-poll, BJP-led Goa government enhanced its strength from 25 to 27 in 40 seat state legislative assembly by accepting support of Goa Vikas Party (GVP).

Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar told reporters that the ruling coalition has accepted unconditional support of GVP, which is having two legislators in the state legislative assembly.

BJP led coalition now comprises of Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), Goa Vikas Party and two independents.

Reciprocating the action, GVP today announced that they will support Alina Saldanha, BJP’s official candidate in Cortalim by poll scheduled on June 4. GVP supremo Fransisco Micky Pacheco said that the party will not field its candidate in the constituency, where it has a strong foothold.

Parrikar said that GVP had extended their support to the ruling government from the first day onwards when they submitted the letter to the Governor. “But we were yet to formally accept the support as there was no time to discuss and understand the coalition,” the chief minister said.

Responding to a question, Parrikar ruled out that the GVP’s entry into the coalition is at the backdrop of Cortalim by poll. “It was never intended that we will fight against GVP candidate in the constituency,” he added.

The cortalim by elections which were scheduled on June 2 initially were postponed by another two days by Election Commission of India, on Wednesday.

The elections were necessitated in the constituency after demise of BJP legislator Matanhy Saldanha. The by poll is expected to have a straight fight between BJP-led alliance and Congress candidate, Raymond D’Sa.

The congress party on Wednesday evening had announced D’Sa as their candidate in this constituency.
