Mangalore: Six from City Bag Top Honours at Asian Powerlifting Championship

Mangalore, May 10: Six from the city, three men and three women, have won a bagful of gold and silver and bronze medals at the Asian Powerlifting Championship held at Udaipur, Rajasthan from May 1 to 7.
Harish Kumar from Morgan's Gate, Ashwin Kudroli, and Vinod Raj of Vamanjoor won a total of eight medals at the men's championship. Deepa Kulal and Amita Poojary of Gokarnanatha College and Neha H of SDM College, Ujire, bagged 11 medals in the women's category.
While Harish Kumar won four golds in different categories, Ashwin bagged three golds and Vinod Raj one silver. Deepa Kulal won four golds, Amita Poojary four silvers and Neha H three bronze.
As many as 250 sportpersons from 17 countries took part in the championship. There were 60 competetitors from India. The championship was held under the aegis of Indian Powerelifting Federation.
Several from Balanjaneya Gymnasium, Car Street, took part. All three men winners belong to the same gym.
The victors returned home on Thursday May 10 to a warm welcome. They were taken in an open jeep procession from the railway station to Balanjaneya gym and from there to Gokarnanatha College where they were felicitated.
The competitions were held in categories like squat, bench lift, dead lift and total, on different body weights.
Coach Sandeep Rao and Purushottam Poojary trained the athletes.
Satish Kudroli, vice-president of Indian Powerlifting Federation told Daijiworld that he was happy to see his team winning, for the secong consecutive year. He also said that though they get government support, it is not sufficient.
Devadas B Contractor and Gokarnanatha College principal Shama were present at the felicitation ceremony.
