Discus Thrower Krishna sets National Record in Hawaii Meet


New Delhi, May 7 (IANS): India's London-bound female discus thrower Krishna Poonia, Commonwealth Games gold medallist, created a national record by winning the silver medal at the Altius Track Crew Throwdown meet in Maui Island, Hawaii.

According to information received here, Krishna Sunday hurled the discuss to 64.76 metres, in her second attempt, to bag the silver and also surpassed Seema Antil's existing national record of 64.64 metres.

Krishna, whose first throw was a foul, threw the discuss to 56.96, 64.76, 62.68, 61.55 and 63.68 metres in her next five attempts to finish her campaign on an impressive note.

Reigning Olympic champion Stephanie Brown Trafton of the US bagged the gold medal with a throw of 66.86 metres, while Gia Lewis-Smallwood pocketed the bronze with an effort of 63.97 metres.

Krishna had qualified for the 2012 London Games after clinching a gold medal at the Fling Throw Meet in Portland in the US earlier this year.
