Mangalore: Thieves Target ATM in Balmatta, Escape

Mangalore, May 6: An ATM in Balmatta was targetted by thieves during the intervening night between Saturday May 5 and Sunday May 6.

The thieves attempted to break into the Canara Bank ATM at the HP petrol bunk in Balmatta here.

The petrold bunk has two ATMs - of Canara Bank and Dhanalaxmi Bank. Of them, only the Canara Bank ATM was targetted while the other one was untouched.

The staff at the petrol bunk were present till around 11.30 pm on Saturday night, and the security guard till midnight. When the guard reported to duty at 6 am on Sunday, he found the ATM damaged.

The ATM box has been broken and its lid pulled open.

City crime branch inspector Venkatesh Prasanna arrived at the spot along with Kadri police.

Speaking to daijiworld, Prasanna said that the police have found a clue to the culprits, and that based on preliminary investigations, no money was stolen.

Srikantamurthy, AGM of Canara Bank (Collector's Gate branch) told Daijiworld that the management of ATM is the responsibility of Canara Bank Computer Services. "Their CCTV footage may throw some light on the matter," he said.

A complaint is yet to lodged.

    ATMs security provider is through outsourcing.Fortunately this service provides jobs for moderate salary to a number of persons mostly ex service men,retd police men etc.,Interestingly mo0st of the security men are of overaged(senior citizfen) who opt for this job by compulsion in life.Accordingly security duty at night times poses a great amount of risk on life for these people which many people does not understand.So they opt for to sleep nearby or inside ATM cabin under AC and sometimes consuming liquor also to get good sleep.In Mangalore city ATMs also this is the common scene in night times.
    So it is obvious that thiefs opt for theft during late night hours for looting ATMs.Now a days doing security duty at night hours in city or otherwise is no more a safe job and hence drawing money from from these ATMs at late hours in night poses great amount of risk on life.
    There is no wonder thefore number of ATM dacoity is on rise these days.

    Do not talk about security, ATMs are poorly maintained by public sector Banks. You feel vomiting sensation, if you see sign boards of some ATMs (see one at BC Road, on highway/pinto complex). No air-conditioning and no lights in many ATMs. utives are busy pursuing their own agendas. Everything is moving in snail's pace. In such scenario, robberies are bound to take place.

    Why robbers are targeting only public sector banks. Autonomy to public sector bank is only in papers while utives, politicians and robbers are looting public sector banks. CBI investigation is going on against many excecutives of Banks. God save these Bank. Our Central Govt owes an explanation... Mera Bharath Mahan..

    What is the use of paying to the security gaurd if he only upto Midnight, The pump staff will be there till 11.30 P.M.
    I think this is not a robbery something else to is going on some where. Only an expert can identify a expert.

    They tried to withdraw money but it told them to “ card and press for password code” which made them furious. For them ATM means Any Time Money which they need whenever they want but without any prior condition. But surprisingly, in this case too, Police or Crime Department will analyze the entire episode of video recording in vain. They can catch thief only if the photo match previous record holders else cassette will go to archives only and bank will get money from Insurance Company

    The thief managed to open the outer cover of the ATM but the point is did the thief manage to take away cash. why cant the media report it correctly. Its not easy to break open an ATM safe.

    Breaking open an ATM in a deserted location is understood, but in the heart of the city is daring!!! Many a times those looking after maintenance are hand in glove with the robbers!! Surprising that no one has come forward to give details of the cash missing? The bank is not at a loss as the ATM will be having burglary insurance!!!
