Panaji, May 4 (IANS): Goa's progress needs to be in harmony with its environment, new Governor Bharat Vir Wanchoo said after taking oath of office Friday.
"The state is witnessing progress and growth needs to be balanced, considering the environment of this most beautiful land of yours," he said. The state's ecology has been hit by largescale illegal mining.
The governor also said that there was no sign of instability in the state.
"Your state has just had an election and the chief minister has a good majority. No sign of instability," Wanchoo told reporters.
"I look forward to working with the dynamic chief minister in furthering the wellness and prosperity of the people of this state," he added.
Wanchoo, a former Indian Police Service officer, retired as the head of the elite Special Protection Group in October 2011.
He succeeds K. Sankaranarayanan, the Maharashtra governor who was given additional charge of Goa.
