Udupi, May 4: Young technocrats of the coastal district have invented a solid waste treatment plant that will efficiently treat the garbage including plastics, all generated in the limits of rural villages, at a time when the village councils were trying to reduce the plastic menace in their localities.
Young engineers Nidhish Shetty, a native of Alevoor, and Abhiman Shetty, a native of Kaup, near here, invented a garbage disposal plant for the first time in Karnataka. The live demonstration of the newly-invented garbage disposal unit was held for the first time in Belapu gram panchayat, near here, on Wednesday May 2.

The garbage disposal unit will automatically segregate the biodegradable waste and plastic and is economical to manage. It would be helpful for different gram panchayats across the district to curb the environmental pollution caused by plastic menace.
The compact plant can be placed in 30 feet x 60 feet space, which can ideally treat the garbage generated in the limits of the gram panchayats. The unit costs about Rs 5 to Rs 6 lac depending on the capacity. The model unit can treat garbage from 3 ton to 5 ton.
The unit is ideal for treating garbage generated in rural villages and has been installed for the first time in Belapu gram panchayat, near here. The innovators have plans to introduce mobile units in cities and towns across the nation.
Experimental unit makes first-run in Belapu
“The treatment of solid waste in rural villages is a major issue and it has been eased by the enterprising engineers who deserve to be appreciated. The unit has been installed with the funds from MLA’s fund, ZP fund, and village council,” said Deviprasad Shetty, president, Belapu gram panchayat.
“The village councils are facing the wrath of residents owing to inefficient management of solid waste by different gram panchayats. The unit can efficiently treat the garbage generated daily within the limits of village panchayat, with many uses. The biodegradable waste can be stored and used as manure for plants in forestry, and the plastic segregated can be recycled,” he added.
Nidhish and Abhiman are engineers who worked abroad in MNCs, but returned to their native villages to develop their innovative ideas, out of their deep interest in solving the garbage menace that has worsened rural living. Both of them secured many awards during their work life in the country and abroad.
