Udupi: Car Designed by Manipal Team to Race on American Tracks

Udupi, May 1: A team of 36 students of Team Manipal Racing (TMR) of Manipal Institute of Technology has conceptualized and designed a new race car ‘TMR V3’. This innovative car is all set to vroom at Wisconsin in Burlington of America, wherein Formula Car race will be held for engineering students at the international level.
The competition will be held in Wisconsin from June 7 to 10.
Chancellor Dr Ramadas M Pai of Manipal University formally launched the car that was designed by TMR here at Manipal University premises on Monday April 30.
Many students of various universities across the globe take part in this event every year. Manipal University will be participating for the third time in the international racing competition organized by the Society of Automative Engineers (SAE), USA.
In the year 2009, for the first time, TMR took part in Wisconsin where it bagged the 97th place among the 115 teams. Last year in Rochestar it finished 62nd among 94 teams. This year 115 universities are likely to compete in the event.
"This time we aim to win and perform better as we have brought in lot of improvements in our all terrain vehicle," said Siddharth Singh of third year mechanical batch at the launch. "It’s the perfect time to apply our theoretical and practical knowledge in a real environment," said the team leader.
This year, two teams from India will take part among which one will be Manipal University and the other will be Veloor Institute of Technology, said Siddharth.
TMR V3 has done various technical advancements over the last two designs, besides the car has got onboard speedometer, various instrumentation of gauges. The car weighs around 250 kg.
The team comprises 36 students, six from technical and three from management departments. The cost of the vehicle is Rs 11 lac and the fund was raised with the help of sponsors.
