Bantwal, Apr 25: “Basavanna was a visionary of his time who propagated secularism in society through his psalms,” said MLA B Ramanath Rai.
Rai was speaking after inaugurating Basava Jayanti and national Panchayat Raj Day celebrations that were jointly organized by the national festival celebration committee and taluk panchayat at SJRY auditorium, B C Road, on Tuesday April 24.
The compositions of Basavanna who lived in the 12th century are still prevalent even now with a message to reform society. “The compositions of visionary Basavanna, who was born in a Hindu family but strived for a secular society, have to be popularized among the people, in order for them to lead better lives,” added Rai.
Taluk Bar Association president Kaje Ramachandra Bhat delivered the keynote address on Panchayat Raj, local governance by village councils that would empower the rural people. TP president Shailaja P Shetty presided over the programme.
TP steering committee president Madhav Mave and Tahsildar C H Anand Nayak were present on the dais. The taluk panchayat CEO Vishwanath Poojary welcomed the gathering.
