Kolkata, Apr 18 (DHNS): The West Bengal State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has written to Facebook authorities in the US to delete certain derogatory posts on the social networking site on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her acolytes in the Trinamool Congress.
The CID has officially denied the report, but sources in the department confirmed that the Facebook authorities had been asked to delete certain morphed images of Banerjee and disparaging posts on her. The investigating agency has also requested for information on the IP addresses of the computers from which the pictures were uploaded.
The move comes after the recent furore over the arrest and subsequent release of a Jadavpur University professor for circulating an email containing caricatures of Banerjee and Railway Minister Mukul Roy conniving to remove former Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi from office.
Facebook, which falls under the ambit of US laws, divulges information only if there is a threat to national security or if someone’s life is at stake.
Director General, CID, V V Thambi however declined to comment on the matter. “I can’t comment on it as I am not supposed to speak to the media,” he said.
