Kundapur: Police Constable from Mangalore Drowns in Varahi River

Kundapur, Apr 18: A police constable named Nitin Kumar (24) attached to the traffic (west) police station in Mangalore, drowned after being dragged in by an undercurrent in River Varahi near Bharatkal, Shakaranarayana, in the taluk on Tuesday April 17.

Kumar was the son of Raghuram Golla, working as clerk in the range forest office at Shankaranarayana. Kumar had put in three years of service in the police department as constable.

On Monday, Kumar had applied for leave on health grounds and visited his native place. On Tuesday morning, he visited Kundapur to bring some things for his family, and wanted to take bath in the river before proceeding to a marriage function that was to take place in the afternoon. At around 11 am, he and two of his friends entered the river, but Nitin Kumar, who got caught in the undercurrent, could not wriggle himself out.

Kumar was unmarried, and his mother had breathed her last four years ago. Locals said that three persons had died at this spot in the recent past.

After conducting post mortem at the primary health centre, Bidkalkatte, Kumar’s body was taken to Banglegudde, Karkala, where the ancestral home of his mother is located, for funeral.
