Mangalore, Apr 8: Sujata, 28-year-old woman died of severe bleeding after delivering her baby at K S Hegde Hospital here on Sunday April 7. She had a normal delivery, but developed complications later and passed away.
Sujata's husband Suresh and the family have blamed the hospital and the doctor who treated her of negligence and failure to provide information to the family on her condition.
In a complaint to Ullal police, Suresh stated that Sujata was admitted to K S Hegde hospital in Derlakatta on Thursday April 5, and she had a normal delivery at 2.45 pm on Saturday April 7. It was her first pregnancy and she gave birth to a healthy girl.
However, she later suffered from severe bleeding, and doctors opted to remove her uterus.
Suresh stated that at around 6 pm, when the family inquired about her health and that of the baby, the doctors allegedly refused to provide any information. Later, whem Suresh along with two other close relatives entered the ICU and touched Sujata, they felt her to be unresponsive and motionless. Her death was revealed to the family by the doctor only at around 9 pm, the complaint stated.
Suresh in his statement to the police alleged that the negligence of the doctor in treating his wife caused her death. He also sought action against the hospital.
A case has been registered in Ullal police station.
Hospital's version
When Daijiworld contacted the hospital, a doctor who did not want to be named said that till the time of delivery Sujata's condition was normal. She had postpartum haemorrhage which could not be brought under control. The doctor added that bleeding could not be controlled due to ‘various’ reasons.
"The uterus contraction procedure that happens in any normal delivery did not happen with her, and though blood was given, bleeding continued. As a last resort hysterectomy was conducted at 5 pm. However, unforeseen complications caused her death," he said.
About Suresh’s complaint that doctors refused to give information about his wife’s condition, he said that sometimes doctors could be busy treating the patient, and they cannot speak to the relatives every time they enquire about the patient’s condition. He assured that the doctors had done their best to save Sujata's life.
