Panaji: Mad Rush for Petrol as Karnataka Border Residents Line up in Goa

Daijiworld Media Network - Panaji

Panaji, Apr 3: As expected, people residing around Karnataka - Goa border are rushing to Goa to grab litres and litres of petrol for their vehicles. The new petrol price was introduced in Goa on Saturday March 31 midnight. By Sunday evening, almost all petrol pumps around Polem, a place near Goa-Karnataka border were closed down after running out of stock!

In Karnataka petrol costs Rs 74 per litre, but in Goa, after the recent reduction in the price, it sells for Rs 54!

According to the petrol pump staff at Polem, Karnataka registration vehicles are pouring in, consuming almost 75% of their stock on day one.

A petrol pump owner, speaking to daijiworld said that this could prove costly for the petrol pumps in Goa, as there are huge queues of Karnataka vehicles lined up everywhere. This will affect the local Goans who will be deprived of their share, he felt. "It would be better if Goa government brings a new rule that petrol should be reserved only for Goan registered vehicles," he said. But he also agreed that such a rule would not be practical.

Some sources have told daijiworld that people with vehicles that have large storage capacity, fill them with petrol which they sell in Karnataka for a smaller price than its actual market rate.

Anything can be possible, as long as there is no uniformity in the products sold in different states!

If Goa can sell petrol for Rs 54, Why it is Rs 74 in Karnataka..!!??? Is it because our politicians belly is very big ????? And not yet filled ??

I think all roads to our beautiful Goa will be jam backed due to the cheap petrol over there. I am a NRI from New York and the petrol (gas) prices in New Jersey is much cheaper and most of them go there and fill their tank. I hope they have the cheap prices in Karnataka.

Karnataka should learn the lesson from Goa. When Goa can why can't we. If we don't act at the appropriate time then it will be another venue for black market, and bribery. corruption.

GOA Government has reduced Tax rate from 20% to 0.10% which is like almost a shock to Congress ruled states. But it really gives some huge shocks to its own BJP state Karnataka. Now the state can do only Nataka. How Goa can survive with such steep fall in tax rate and VAT collections will fall like anything. If goa can survive other states can also do the same thing just reduce the tax rates and make people happy. Goa Zindabad..

Market Economics come here to play-
You reduce the fuel price or tax on it, which spurs more sale of the product earning more revenue than when higher is the price & less is consumed bringing less revenue for the govt.
Goa will rake in more in Fuel Tax Revenue than when it was High.
Any one out here who dispute "Swaminomics"?
At the end of year compare Karnataka's & Goa's share of Fuel Tax collection, compared to last financial year.
Then you would say Swami & I are telling the truth which seems eccentric right now but -That's Life, & how Market Economy is Influenced!

    Nagesh Nayak,

I liked your comment and its most sensible..

Can Karnataka buy petrol and petroleum products from Goa, as both are ruled by BJP... Both can make some good money and end consumers can enjoy a ride...Though Mangalore is the biggest port to handle petroleum products, its sad that petrol is costliest in karnataka compared to other states.....Govt should give a very serious thought and make the life of common man easy..and comfortable...

Look at how states are looting the public. A marginal reduction of sales tax makes petrol Rs. 20/- cheap in Goa. Such being the case, many jokers blame the Central Govt. Why this can not be done in Karnataka and other states and all the public benefit out of it. Bringing down fuel cost will reduce all the costs and in tern inflation comes down

Nagesh, if it was Congress Govt in Karnataka, you would have critisized the policy of the state of karnataka, but as BJ rules the state, you are shifitng blame to Central Govt and talking of equal prices all over the country......state taxes will be affected...and state revenue will decrease.

Fuel for Vehicle and Body is very cheap.
Politics is not mixed with Religion and Politicians do not preach the doctrine of hate, divide and rule.
Interestingly no one tells me what to eat and what not to eat and you can wear what you want.
Either you perform or perish. I wonder when our Karnataka DODO’S will get this into their head.

Nagesh nayak, bangalore. you are right. none of state govt is ready to reduce state sales tax on petrochemicals. and its the highest income for state govt. and even road tax also 20% to 30% more for new vehicles in karnataka, when you compare to other states. and petrol & diesel is expensive in Karnataka, if you compare to other states. sure there is rush over goa border and same thing will not happen in other state border as there is not much cost difference.

This will create problems for GOa .. Because many people bring pterl from Goa and sell at a higher rate in Karnataka those who are staying near GOA .. therfore Karnataka Govt should take also positive step to bring down the petrol price to some extent at least so that burden on the public will be reduced .. Now the petrol price in Karnataka is too high when compared to other states .

I agree to ur idea of uniform fuel prices in all states - that is more or less uniform prices - not a difference of Rs.20 as in Karnataka/Goa. Now the all important point in ur msg - "our peoples' representative need to workon this/raise issue etc. Do u still nourish that dream of 'OUR' representative raising the issue!!!!? When u see in our Karnataka what is happening - our representatives involved all other things stupid than representing their constituency - what more do you expect from them Mr. Prabhu? I ask Nagesh Nayak , that illiterate Harsha Malhotra and  Rakesh Shetty to copy your msg and repeat the same here, which they do very often.

Comes into mind the fragmentation before Independence ! We had all come 'togehter' to achieve it and succeeded! Once that was achieved we were'seperated' again on linguistic bases! Started fighting on this account..Language etc.. then came water... then came the 'border' fight and what not!
    No 'UNIFORMITY anywhere! Now
this "DEFORMITY" in petrol prices! Are more seeds of 'disintegration' being sown?

PETROLEUM PRODUCTS SHOULD COME UNDER THE PREVIEW OF CENTRAL GOVT. LIKE RAILWAYS TO AVOID RUSH IN BORDER PETROL PUMPS.

PRICES SHOULD BE MAINTANINED EQUAL THRUOUT INDIA.

The NEW BJP goverment in Goa reduced the state taxes to lower the price to Rs. 54. Karnataka Goverment should follow similar steps and reduce the price to Rs. 54. This will reduce the cross over to other states for lower petrol prices. It is shocking to see why Karnatka charges such a huge margin of Rs. 20 for each liter of petrol.

Four wheeler ,two wheeler vehicles are today remain no more luxury things like past but a neecessity.Accodingly fuel too being part of it conform a neecessity. There is,therefore a need to bring the fuel prices under unform tax structure. Our peoples representatives need to work on this by raising the issue in the parleament.Hope the central government will understand the plight of the people and do the needful in the best interest of fuel consumers.
