Udupi: IRCS District Disaster Response Team Training from March 24

Udupi, Mar 23: The district Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), in association with state Disaster Management Authority, will be conducting a two-day district disaster response team training at Red Cross Bhavan on Saturday March 24 and Sunday March 25.
About 50 participants from different sections: department of health and family welfare, home department, home guards, youth clubs, faculty and students of colleges, are expected to participate.
The course is designed to provide an opportunity for the participants to acquaint themselves with knowledge on disaster management. This course will guide them to plan for disaster risk reduction and to develop district disaster response team, and to initiate to develop block disaster response team.
The objectives of the training are to initiate, formalize, and develop District Disaster Response Team (DDRT), initiation to develop Block Disaster Response Team (BDRT) in the near future, make available trained human resources during disasters across the state, introduce the concept and share the experience among the participants, and plan out the future capacity building training events for DDRT teams.
The training comprehensively deals with the sub themes, fundaments of disaster management and magnitude of disaster, first aid in emergency and manual transportation with demonstration, fire(nature, properties, types, fire accidents and prevention and fire extinguishers) with mock drill, emergency assessment planning, relief management, emergency shelter, beneficiary selection and relief distribution (sphere standards), family news service and dead body care, public health in emergency, communicable diseases, water, sanitation and hygiene promotion in emergency, community based disaster risk reduction, cyclone and disaster risk mitigation and school disaster management, psychological first aid and psycho-social aspects in disaster management (rehabilitation, plan of action and challenges.
Dr V L S Kumar, member, National Disaster Response Team, IRCS, New Delhi; Dr Ashwini Kumar, department of community medicine, KMC Manipal and member of state disaster response team, IRCS Karnataka; Dr Shashi Soans, department of community medicine, KMC Manipal; Harshavardhan Shetty, member of state disaster response team, IRCS Karnataka; Shivappa, district fire officer, department of fire services; Sajini O K, principal of ANM Training School, Udupi, and Prabhath M Kalkura, national disaster water and sanitation response team, IRCS, New Delhi, will be the resource persons.
After the training, the district disaster response team will be utilized for relief operations during disasters and for capacity building at peripheral level by disseminating the acquired knowledge and practice in their respective areas.
