Udupi, Mar 23: ZP chief executive officer Prabhakar Sharma on Thursday March 22, inaugurated the free pure drinking water unit set up by Lanco–UPCL for the residents of Belapu village at a cost of Rs 13 lac.
Speaking on the occasion, Sharma said that it’s the need of the hour to conserve water resources at the onset of peak summer.
“Private participation in rural development is essential. Lanco–UPCL deserves commendation for its societal concern in providing drinking water facilities to Belapu village,” he added.
Belapu gram panchayat president Deviprasad Shetty, in his presidential address, said that Belapu village has set a model for the district and state in terms of development and people’s welfare projects. He said that the struggle against UPCL will go on as he will not let politics hinder rural development. Shetty also added that he will carry on the struggle even after availing the facilities provided by the UPCL.
UPCL deputy general manager Laxminarayan K P said that each family in Belapu village will get 12 liters of pure drinking water per day through the unit. “Drinking water will be supplied to Anganawadis and schools in Belapu village also. There are plans to extend the facilities to other villages too,” he added.
UPCL senior project manager Sudarshan Prasad, ZP engineering department executive engineer Sridar Murti, assistant engineer D V Hegde, TP chief executive officer D Manjunatayya, Belapu gram panchayat members Suguna Bhat, Suresh Devadiga, Deepashree Shetty, Paigam Banoo, Vimala and Anita, local Masjid chief Ibrahim Saheb, and Government Composite High School head master Ramakrishna P R were present on the occasion.
Belapu gram panchayat member Prakash Rao welcomed the gathering. Secretary Appu Sherigar proposed the vote of thanks. Vishwanath Belapu compered the programme.
