Kasargod: Clashes Erupt over Retirement Age Issue, Police Resort to Lathicharge

Kasargod, Mar 22: The protest staged by left wing youth organizations in front of District Commissioner’s office here on Wednesday March 21, opposing the retirement age of 56 years set by the state administration, turned violent while the police resorted to baton charging and burst tear gas to contain the violent mob.
Policemen and protesters were injured in the violence. City police sub-inspector Mohammed Iqbal, police women Saraswati and Leena, youth activists Manikanta, K Ravindra Nabeesa, P V Rajish, and Jai Hind TV channel correspondent Purushottam were injured in the mob violence.
DYFI, AIYF, and RYF activists were involved in the protest that turned violent when they held a rally from Vidhya Nagar junction to the district commissioner’s office. The police restrained the protesters at the entrance of the district headquarters.
The tense situation prevailed for nearly one-and-a-half-hours and normalcy was restored after additional policemen arrived at the spot.
The police arrested hundreds of activists and admitted the injured in different hospitals in the city.
