Panaji, Mar 17: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Subhash Shirodkar resigning from the post today has said that the party cadre should not be discouraged with the recent poll results and instead should reignite themselves like phoenix bird.

Shirodkar ended his four year long tenure as a party chief this afternoon by submitting his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi in the national capital. He was accompanied by former Chief Minister Digambar Kamat and Gandhi’s political advisor, Ahmad Patel.

“The party cadres should not be discouraged with the defeat in assembly polls. We should start the work from grassroot level and party should reignite itself like a phoenix bird from the ashes,” he said addressing a press conference in Congress house.

Shirodkar said that the state leadership in its discussion with the party president had justified that the issues like Medium of Instruction (MOI), many tickets to one family and wrong candidates led to the debacle in the polls.

“Gandhi just listened and she did not offer any comment on our discussion,” Shirodkar said, refusing to divulge the reaction of Gandhi on these issues. He said that the MOI was a major setback as people from both the viewpoints were upset with the party.

“We should have considered the viewpoint of people supporting marathi and Konkani,” the outgoing GPCC chief said, adding that people supporting English also were angry because we could not do anything for them.

Shirodkar said that in several cases, there was a mis-judgment about winnability due to which the real cadre were hurt.

“For instance in Bicholim, people with Naresh Sawal were against the Congress because we did not give him ticket. Similar is the situation in Mayem where we refused ticket to Pravin Zantye. Also in Siolim, we gave ticket to Uday Palyekar,” he pointed out.

When asked whether tickets given to candidates supported by Vishwajit Rane resulted in the negative vibes with the people, Shirodkar did not reply straight. “You can say that we made wrong choices,” he commented.

The outgoing GPCC chief also said that in many cases the candidates were overconfident of their victory.
