Mysore, Mar 14: Dr Shweta (27), a dentist by profession, hanged herself at her parental home in N R Mohalla here on Monday March 12. Reportedly, she was overwhelmed at mental and physical torture suffered at the hands of her husband.
Shweta’s husband, Chandrakant Chauhan, works as an engineer in Abu Dhabi. Chandrakant is from Hassan, but was living in Vijayanagar in the city since some time. After their marriage was solemnized during April last, both of them had started working in Abu Dhabi.
It is said that Chandrakant started pestering his wife to bring an additional amount of Rs 20 lac as dowry from her parents. When she objected to his habit of chatting with girls on the internet, Shwetha is said to have suffered physical torture at her husband’s hands. Because of differences between the two, he came to Mysore on some pretext three months ago along with his wife, and returned after leaving her at her parental home.
It is learnt that Chandrakant severed all contacts with his wife thereafter, nor did he take steps for her trip to Abu Dhabi. When she tried to speak to him, he curtly told her not to call him unless she is able to bring the amount demanded by him.
Shweta, in a suicide note left behind, said her husband and his family members were responsible for his death. A case was registered at Nazarbad police station in this connection.
