Mumbai, Mar 9 (IANS): Bollywood actor John Abraham, who was detained Friday after a court rejected an appeal against his conviction for injuring two people while riding a motorcycle in 2006, is out on bail.

The Bombay High Court granted the bail to John Abraham and stayed the 15 days jail term awarded earlier by the Sessions Court, which upheld an earlier verdict pronounced by a Bandra magistrate.

After Abraham's lawyers moved the high court post-haste, justice R.C. Chavan granted bail of Rs.20,000 to the actor and also stayed the operation of the lower court sentence till the pendency of the matter.

Police detained Abraham immediately after the sessions court rejected his plea against the 15-day simple imprisonment and fine of Rs.15,000 awarded to him by a magistrate's court in 2010. He was initially taken for a medical examination.

The sessions court also rejected Abraham's plea for four days' time to surrender.

It was not immediately clear whether the prosecution would seek enhanced punishment for Abraham.

Bandra additional chief metropolitan magistrate S.V. Kulkarni had convicted Abraham in 2010 for injuring two youths - Tanmay Majhi (19) and Shyam Kasbe (22) when his motorcycle collided with their bicycle in Khar in northwest Mumbai in April 2006.

The actor had rushed the two victims to a hospital.

The 39-year-old model-turned-actor is currently promoting his first production venture "Vicky Donor", a film about sperm donors.

He is known for his role in films like "Jism", "Water", "Dostana" and Force".

Few topics are not worth reading from the comments. If those who kill in accidents roam around freely how come this news attract so many readers to comment in such harsh words? It is clear the accident was not intentional as the other party is hurt more in the same accident and shown humanity by rushing the victims to hospital despite hurt more than them. Very sad indeed.

    Hi JA,
Mistakes happen to everyone who drives and all those who drive are potential criminals in case of an accident. You have displayed a true human beings responsibility in ensuring the safety of the injured which proves that it was a sheer accident & not deliberate act. Life has good and bad patches in its course and that's why you are prosecuted for an accident of 2006. I wish you good-luck in your career ahead and worry not on trivial negative patches of life...You are a wonderful star and a complete human being....

    True and Sincere Regards

    A Well Wisher

John Abraham, you are great ... Despite being a star, you had the courtesy and kindness to rush the victims to the hospital... There are many, many Drivers and others who run away after killing somebody on the road, and they are not even caught or punished... John Abraham, you are one of the very few who took responsibility of treating the victims. The victims are to be blamed for this kind of treatment on John Abraham. It is very sad ...

Why is everyone after John? Despite being a star, he had the courtesy and kindness to rush the victims to the hospital...what about the hundreds of bus drivers and others who run away after killing somebody on the road...they are not even caught or punished...John is not the first person to drive rashly, but he's one of the few who took responsibility of treating his victims.

I think the Judiciary in our wonderful country is the best in the whole wide world. John Abraham met with an accident in 2006 and is finally sentenced to 15 days imprisonment after 6 long years! What a joke! By the way, Kasab, take it easy man! Just don't worry. You are in India, not Pakistan. So you will be finally sentenced only after your death! That's our Judiciary! Mera Bharath Mahaan!!
