Mangalore, Mar 9: Konkani music legend Wilfy Rebimbus was fondly remembered on Friday March 9 in his native parish Jeppu.
A memorial mass was offered at Jeppy Church by his family members and well-wishers at 7.30 am. Fr Nelson Almeida, parish priest of Jeppu, Fr Joseph Martis, rector of Jeppu seminary, Fr Walter D'Mello, parish priest of Milagres Church were the main celebrants.
A brief programme was held at Jeppu Church hall soon after the mass. Leslie Rego offered tribute to the legend, and Fr Pius D'Souza of Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikkarnakatte offered prayers.
Widely known as 'Father of Konkani music', Wilfy Rebimbus passed away on March 9, 2010 after a brief illness. The legacy of his music is being carried forward by his wife Meena Rebimbus, and children Veena and Vishwas.
Though Wilfy Rebimbus' dream of completing 250 music shows could not be fulfilled while he was alive, the rest of the Wilfy troupe has continued to perform since April 2011 with shows in Mangalore, Mumbai and Doha last year.
His 250th show will be performed in Mangalore on December 23, 2012.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Meena Rebimbus said, "We don't feel like he is not with us. He is surely with us in spirit, his legacy will continue. We are grateful to his well-wishers worldwide for their support at all times, including during the most difficult days of our lives."
Wilfy Rebimbus' daughter Veena and son Vishwas too pen lyrics and compose Konkani songs like their father. Their songs have been presented during 'Wilfy Nites'.
On April 27, 2012 'Wilfy Nite' will be organised in Dubai by SMKC at Al Nasr Leisureland.
