Mangalore: Bike-Car Accident Leaves Two Dead

Mangalore, Mar 4: Prashant, a lawyer who was critically injured in an accident between a bike and a car at Jeppinamogeru here on Saturday March 3 night, passed away on Sunday March 4 evening after battling for life.

His companion Akesh died in the accident on Saturday night.

Akesh Kotian Ullal a 24-year-old was riding the bike (KA 19 J 8916). Pillion rider Prashant of Beltangady, a lawyer by profession, sustained grave injuries and his condition was critical.

Akesh was the son of Krishnappa Ullal, a resident of Subhashnagar, Ullal. He was working in the fire and safety division of MRPL.

Akesh and Prashant were riding from Thokkottu to Mangalore, when a car, a Maruti Eco (KA 19 MB 6924), plying from the opposite direction rammed into their bike and sped on. The driver of the car, however, stopped some distance away as he too was hurt.

The car driver was admitted to Netaji hospital in Thokkuttu.

The accident occured at around 11.30 pm on the national highway.

    I am at a loss to understand some of the comments in this forum. Many comment that speed kills. Yes, it is true for all vehicles irrespective of whether it is two wheeler or six wheeler. In the past 10 days we saw multiple bike riders being killed and in all cases, the fault is with four wheel drivers which rammed into two wheelers killing them instantly. It is clear, that these bike riders were careful and maintaining the speed! So, why the comment that these youngsters don't know how to ride and the parents should not buy two wheelers to their kids? If two wheelers should not be used by youngsters then who will use it? The only way you can stop two wheelers from plying is, to stop production. Is that practical?

    The fault lies, most of the time, with 4 wheelers and not two wheelers. A common problem that is faced on Indian Road is - the decipline and the way the roads are built, there are very few roads with proper lane marking. I think, 80% roads dont have lanes. That is the pathetic condition of our roads and our administration. We are still living in 16th century!

    I beg you, pls. Stop using two wheeler as much as possible. It may be little inconvenient to travel by bus, but use it for the sake of your life and your loved ones. Three members of my neighbouring family died in two separate bike accidents which is still rolling in my mind. Imagine three members of a family dying from a similar accident.

    Damodar Bhat, Udupi whatever you said is 100% correct. This a a very incident which took place. Also in our DK districts most of the riders it doesnt matter two wheelers, four wheelers etc ride as if they are the king of the roads as a result such accident takes place. Everyone while riding has the intention of going or reaching first. Also the rider has to take patience while riding the vehichles.

    i agree with cyril on dividers.but inspite of that some drivers and riders are impatient to go around and take u turns.they go through wrong sidesand some times squeeze in between small gaps in dividers.

    Patience is the need of the hour. The least patient of the lot unfortunately are two wheeler riders... stop at a signal light and two wheelers start filling every gap, nook and cranny available on the road, squeezing through the left side,cutting across idling cars/buses has become so common,infrastructure does play a part,however,impatience is the clincher. Next time you are a signal light, a railway crossing, or at a traffic jam... spare sometime to observe how impatient two wheeler riders are, and if you are riding one, take a moment to reflect on why you/ other two wheelers are riding so rash.... the race for a few seconds is best on a race track...please spare those few seconds, to ride slow and safe. The smaller the vehicle one ride on, the greater the risk and most importantly the greater the caution one must observe... no use blaming each other... life once gone won't come back.. now will it???

    Mangalore RTO is busy collecting money from the riders and the drivers , but they never thought about fixing these muddy dirty roads.. My best advise we public has to dig one big hole in the middle of the road and put all the currupted police, ministers, RTO officers with their pigmy(money collecting polices, and all their chamchass berry them alive. so that the next officers know the public law. whats public power .

    How many people have to die before some thing can be done about this?
    First , the highway is dangerous as we know it. To top that you add this two wheeler... think of this as exponential danger.

    Bikes are always exposed to danger across the world.But they do some thing to limit the damage. For example..
    In THE United States , a 4 wheeler is not allowed to share a lane with biker. However two bikers can share a lane.

    We need to come up with the some predefined sets of policies to address this dangerous issue. I cant imagine an express bus , car or truck sharing a two way street and a biker...Humans have limitations. As ,much as we blame the truck/car /express driver, some thing inherently wrong with the system and that needs to be addressed.

    Wise comments by Joseph/Doha and Shahanawaz/Dubai and I strongly endorse them. I would also add that Mangalore has the worst roads and walking footpaths and civic traffic sense as well. I would implore the two wheel riders, please be extra careful always when driving, since you are the one who is most vulnerable to injuries in the event of an unfortunate accident.

    Sad to see many young people lose lives. Its time to pray and seek God ! How many more to go lord ? On the eve of new year of 2011i spent time in prayer, I asked God whats in for year 2012? I had vision and voice told me that this year will be year of accidents and suffering for many ! Folks please pray for our young kids.God is our only hope since life and death are in his hands.

    It is getting out of hands of the administration. Very soon they should divide the roads in two and put dividers so that the opposite direction vehicle does not hit the vehicle on the other side they have to do it on urgent basis. So many innocent lives lost in this year 2011-2012. Its late but never too late and the administration has to work faster on war basis ie war against accidents.

    I feel parents should not buy 2 wheelers for their children.Often these college children are seen to be riding at top speed , sometimes in a zig zag way.I don't understand the hurry / stress that these children are suffering from.Infact, it is safer to give them a second hand maruti car.Two days ago 2 young Engineering students died.Fighting as to who was right or wrong is another matter but the 2 wheelers are dead by then.Young children/ students please remember that you have a bright future ahead of you.Your parents have brought you up with great difficulty and self sacrifice. Please do not over speed.

    Very very sad .. only mere lip condolences will not prevent any more loss of lives. Mangaloreans ... you are showing how pathetic and callous you are .... everybody is responsible. So many precious lives have been lost very recently and yet the administration is not at all showing any seriousness in curbing this. The main problem is due to absolute lack of civic sense ... no ethics prevailing, many guys just adopt a care-a-damn-attitude and chaltha hain chalatha hai attitude. In the process "passing on the buck to others". Everybody is in a mad mad rush... hurrying .. where .. God alone knows (.... this message is most apt to those vehicle owners in and around Mangalore ... guys, please for heavens sake get a hold on your controls, else you have to solely bear the consequences due to the lives lost in and around your neighbourhood, in your metropolitan Mangalore and that too right in the FRONT OF YOUR EYES). What sheer callousness. I have umpteen times mentioned through this forum that Mangalore L A C K S total civil awareness ... and appalling infrastructure. No boasting ... a metropolitan like Bombay where I reside, DOESN'T even have half the infrastructure which Mangalore has. Yet (touchwood) I have seen Bombayites displaying a great amount of extreme restraint ... to its own people, even when the situation boils down. Some civic sense prevails in Bombay. Mangalore needs to take a cue from Bombay. Unfortunate for Mangalore, as of now.

    Why Indian goverment not making compulsary for wearing helmets to the bike driver & pillion rider like other country. By doing this at least 60% less death case in the accidents.And the parents must specify thier childrens for wearing helmet while bike driving.if they not wearing do not allow them take bike.My heart feeling condolence to the decesed family.great loss to the famaliy.

    Very sad. The roads are not any more safer... The district administration must make wearing helmets compulsory so that at least some young lives can be saved. |I have written to the DC of Udupi and sent him a mail. Infact I have referred DW clips to DC. If there is no proper response, then along with some responsible citizzens of Udupi we are planning to go in for a indefinite hunger strike outside DC office at Manipal...     Today morning one of our employees met with an accident and he was riding in his bike and was it by a speeding vehicle. His vehcile was dragged and he was tossed away and fell on the ground as a resultof which he got multiple fractures.. rib, shoulder, leg and upper spine., but he was saved by the helmet as he was wearing a helmet and his helmet is cracked but head is safe.
