Udupi, Mar 4: With the Udupi-Chikmagalur bypoll nearing, both Congress and BJP are firing all guns in a bid to woo the voters.
While BJP state president Eshwarappa called a press meet here on Sunday March 4, Congress on the other hand held a meeting to publicise people-friendly schemes by the central government and to release a list of corruption scams of the BJP-led state government.
Eshwarappa addressing reporters at the BJP office said that around 1200 part workers are ready for the polls in the 1500 booths set up for the bypoll.
He said that BJP would go for door-to-door campaign and reach out to the people. He expressed confidence that BJP would win by a huge margin, even bigger than last time.
He also pointed out that the presence of JD(S) as a competitor in the bypoll was advantageous to the BJP as it would divide the Congress votes.
On the issue of Yeddyurappa demanding the CM's post and the fissions within the party, he said that there was no question of such things after BJP national chief Nitin Gadkari had made it clear that there would be no change in state leadership.
Referring to the assault on mediapersons by lawyers in Bangalore on Friday March 2, he condemned the incident and said that a few lawyers had already been arrested.
"The government has already taken action and ordered a judicial probe," he added.
He also said that BJP is confident of leading a smoothly-functioning government and giving a people an efficient administration.
Congress Releases List of BJP Scams
While BJP convened a press meet, the Congress on the other hand organized a publicity campaign of the schemes introduced by the centre, and also to dicuss the upcoming bypoll.
The programme was organized by the KPCC's legal and human rights cell at the Congress Bhavan.
A list of BJP-led government's scams was also released on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating the programme, Rajya Sabha MP Oscar Fernandes, who has been given the charge of Congress campaign, perhaps indirectly referring to the assault on mediapersons by lawyers in Bangalore, said that during the freedom struggle, lawyers had fought for people's rights and won the freedom for the country.
"Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru were lawyers too, who laid the foundation for the country's parliament. It was Mahatma Gandhi's mission to wipe every tear from every eye," he said.
He also took potshots at BJP and sarcastically said that what BJP had done in one year, Congress will not do in three years.
Among those present were Dhananjay, Mohinder Singh, Vedaprakash, Prakash Shetty, Shyamala Bhandary and others.
